The Wild Onion is an American style bakeshop and café on High Street, near the Milk Market. If you were to judge restaurants on the queue outside them then the Wild Onion would win every time. My mom and I had booked in advance so we were seated straight away, but there were a number of people waiting outside the door (in the lashing rain) for a space to open up. A waiter brought us over menus, a jug of water and two glasses almost immediately. I ordered some coffee and again this came to our table very quickly. It comes in a jug so you get an automatic top up and is possibly the best coffee in Limerick City!! You can see the kitchen from the restaurant floor so you really get the feel of a busy American diner, the atmosphere is like no-where else in the city that I’ve been.
I ordered the Tex-Mex chicken with salsa and swapped the sides (you have a choice of two of the following; hash browns, pasta salad or coleslaw) for a large salad, my Mom had the same. We were both very pleased with the meal, the chicken was really spicy and the salsa really complimented it. The salad dressing came on the side, which is a nice touch because not everyone is as big a fan of salad dressing as I am. My mom was even impressed and it is very difficult to impress her!!!!!
Notes: the portions are very very big, that’s why I swapped the sides for salad, if you are calorie counting this is something you should consider. Also, this is an American style restaurant run by an American couple, if you are looking for “irishized” American food ( like the “Texas Steak Out” et al) then this is not the place for you!!!!!!!
Mini disclaimer: I included a link to the website above, but I've been advised that the website hasn't been updated recently and the menu might vary ever so slightly from what you see on the website.
